I Almost Lost My Husband Last Year… Why I’m Restarting My Metabolic Reset Program
Listening to the radio this morning, I started to cry. Music can elicit emotions and these were tears of joy and gratitude.
Several months ago, we were close to losing my husband to advanced metastatic cancer.
In March, I was asked to be the Keynote speaker for Washington’s Speakers Group. There were over 100 exceptional women present, and my topic was on Resiliency, Women & Wisdom. My key points: Women (and men) are resilient and wise. The body has the innate ability to heal from within if we can just get out of our own way. Can you relate to this?
I also emphasized that we need to stop the war. The war on ourselves, beating ourselves up for our perceived imperfections. Beating up each other with judgment and criticism. Most of all, the war between conventional and integrative or alternative medicine.
I believe that Doug would not be alive today if it weren’t for both.
His physician at Moffitt Cancer Center and his physicians at Florida Cancer Center have said the same thing….amazing. He appears to be in remission 4 months after a combination of conventional and integrative therapies.
Of course, Doug IS amazing! He was also willing and able to make changes to his diet and lifestyle. He went 7 months without his daily beloved chocolate fix and eliminated alcohol, all refined sugars and processed foods. He went gluten free. He couldn’t cook, so was dependent on my shopping and cooking. (Devilish grin here!) Bone broth, liver pate and daily roasted bone marrow, supplements, and specialized yoghurts kept his gut healthy in spite of the chemotherapy, radiation and gut-ravaging pharmaceutical cocktails.
The fact that he did not lose his hair, did not suffer from nausea, vomiting, constipation or diarrhea is a testament to the power of targeted food and herbs as medicine.
Thus, the frequent response from virtually all of his providers who saw him from December to now…Amazing!
So my question is, why should this be amazing? When will the STANDARD of CARE be the norm to have a nutritionally trained, functional medicine health coach as part of the team? Someone who will question the advice often given to drink Ensure and eat donuts to keep up the calories? Someone who will question the doctor when they say it doesn’t matter what you eat, and it’s not true that sugar can contribute to cancers.
If sugar has no effect on cancer cells, then why is the PET Scan, with radioactive glucose, still the standard test for identifying cancer cells? Until my daughter’s cancer diagnosis over 15 years ago, I didn’t know that cancer cells have 15x the receptor sites for glucose (aka sugar), which is why cancer cells light up on a PET Scan.
Dana’s oncologist said something else that I will never forget. He said that getting rid of cancer is the easy part. Keeping it gone is the challenge. No one will argue with this. This is why remission is the first phase of treatment. Too many think this is permission to return to their prior diet and lifestyles.
Still today, after decades and billions of dollars spent on the “War on Cancer”, most cancers have “no cure”. The best that the conventional physicians quote is to get it into remission with dependency on drugs that may extend life 5-10 years.
This is unacceptable to me. There are actually no known drugs (and therefore no known cure) for most chronic diseases, which include my own autoimmune disease Vitiligo, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity as well as cancers. The advice is to be on medication for life to manage the symptoms. Many of these medications have negative side effects, leading to more medication management and ultimately more disease.
Just as I have been able to put my autoimmune disease in remission (and helped hundreds, if not thousands too), we can do this with virtually all chronic illnesses whose root causes are ultra-processed food, toxicity and stress.
Never underestimate the power you have, to make better choices, to upscale your diet, to address the toxicity in your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies. Hence, my mantra:
Optimal Health is not complicated. If we do these three simple things consistently, we can heal from even the scariest of diagnoses.
One of Doug’s doctors told him in February, had we not done what we did, he only gave him 4 weeks to live.
Change is possible. Everyone thinks that change is hard. Change is not hard. The decision to change is what holds people up.
Doug had no choice. I told him that he was going to the Emergency Room with me, or I would call 911, and he would go on a stretcher.
In the past 10 months, I have sold or given away nearly all of our personal belongings, our beautiful home, furniture, clothing, moved us to Florida and was the primary chief cook and caregiver for Doug, who is the love of my life. In the process, I feel like I have aged 20 years, I’ve gained 15 pounds and my blood pressure has risen while my eyesight and health have gone downhill. This is super common amongst caregivers. Which is why to PRIORITIZE SELF is often the most challenging step over MAXIMIZE and MINIMIZE.
Now that we are out of the immediate danger zone. I am ready and wanting to restart my Metabolic Reset Program. I’ve spent thousands of dollars and years perfecting this program that can prevent, as well as reverse, chronic disease.
We all have our “why”. You just read about why I am passionate about making dietary and lifestyle changes. What is your WHY? What is it that you want? How do you want to feel? Who do you want to be healthy for and why? Please share!
Please commit to joining me for either my DIY KickStart to Wellness Program and/or my Metabolic Reset Program. The longer you wait, the more expensive healthcare becomes.
PS
One of our daughters is getting married this July 4th, so I have another reason to release this excess weight quickly AND healthfully using the best of conventional and integrative medicine.
