What Gets in Your Way?

While swimming this morning, I realized that it took me nearly 50 years to really prioritize my health.
- 1. It took a daughter with a scary cancer diagnosis.
- 2. It took my blood pressure to soar to new heights (heights that put me at risk for stroke and cardiovascular accidents).
- 3. It took losing a brother in law to cancer.
It took a number of wake up calls. Some of us have thicker, more stubborn skulls (definitely runs in my family!).
Truth be known, we all THINK that we care for ourselves.
We think we eat fairly healthily.
We think we are doing our best.
But are we really?
We also think we should do it alone….But you don’t have to, nor should you! Isolation is deadly, the worst form of punishment.
The fact is that, left to our own devices, we will fall back into old patterns. This is why community is essential. We need support. People to cheer you on. People with common goals. People to inspire you and raise your energy. A coach to educate and empower you.
Left to our own devices, those pesky Automatic Negative Thoughts take over and we give up.
It takes energy to overcome this inertia.
What is the hardest part of change? It’s making a decision to start. It’s making a commitment.

I guess I should tell you that had I NOT prioritized my health, I would still be 35# heavier, with an out of control autoimmune disease and on MULTIPLE medications!
